Nimmo and co are sitting second bottom of the Celtic league with 14 point from the 13 games so far this season however the former Cornish Pirates second row is relishing this weekend's clash.
To Nimmo the visit of their Welsh rivals is the perfect opportunity to build some momentum in the LV= Cup and beyond.
"It is a bit refreshing to be in another cup competition, a chance to get a fresh start and hopefully find that winning habit," he said.
"It is ramped up that little bit being a derby and if we came out of it with a win I think it could really shift some momentum into our season - psychologically it would be very handy for us.
"A win could get the ball rolling as they are a local team to us and it is always a good thing to win those derby games.
"For us we really just need to get some momentum going and push for points so hopefully winning would get the lads' tails up and we can take it from there."
The Dragons have slipped to five straight defeats in all competitions since beating Mogliano home and away in the European Challenge Cup in December. Dragons' only win in the LV= Cup in their last seven ties was 30-29 at London Wasps in October 2011.
All three of Dragons' previous encounters with fellow Welsh regions in this tournament have been won by the
home side on the day.
Ospreys only away win in any competition since early October was in this equivalent fixture in the PRO12 at Rodney Parade on New Year's Eve.
Ospreys have won their last seven matches against fellow Welsh regions in all competitions.
The two teams have met twice before in the LV= Cup with Dragons victorious 40-19 at Rodney Parade in January 2010, and Ospreys taking the clash in Bridgend 26-21 two years later.
For the Dragons the LV= Cup holds far from happy memories this term with a 30-20 defeat at home to Northampton and a 36-15 reverse against Bath.
In contrast the Ospreys have won one, lost one after beating Gloucester and going down to Exeter and as a result are in contention to make it to the knock-out stages.
For the Liberty Stadium outfit the trip to Rodney Parade is something of a homecoming for Newport-born hooker Matt Dwyer, who is set to sign a new Ospreys deal imminently, and he's desperate to make it a clash to remember.
"We have just got to concentrate on ourselves and as long as the team performs well then we'll come away with a good victory," said Dwyer.
"We just need to make sure we do our jobs well and put in a good performance.
"It'll be nice to go down to Rodney Parade having grown up in Newport and it is an important game for the club. I have had a few chances in the LV= Cup this season and I have enjoyed them and it's about taking the opportunities that I am given."
