The Kiwi helped Leicester secure a nervy 9-5 win over Toulouse on Sunday to ensure their progress in Europe, setting up a trip to high-flying Toulon in April.
And while it may not have been a free-scoring masterclass, Hamilton is convinced it could be the win to kick-start the Tigers' season.
"It was quite an odd game as the opposition kept missing kicks - if they had made some of those we might have had to chance our arm more but we were able to grind out the win," said the 32-year-old.
"In terms of the club it was probably one of the biggest wins we have had in a long time for our confidence. We haven't been playing great rugby all year and losing at the weekend would have been a big blow to the psyche, but we're third in the Aviva Premiership and now we have a quarter-final the Heineken Cup.
"It will be very a very tough trip away, but there's no one here who doesn't think we can do it and given a bit of confidence we can go toe-to-toe with the biggest clubs."
If any side knows how to manage a campaign so they arrive at the business end of the season in top form, it's the Welford Road outfit and Hamilton believes Leicester will only get better during the Six Nations - despite losing a host of players to representative duties.
"I think we have a lot of improving to do - probably more so than any of the other teams," added the twice-capped All Black.
"But I've been here for four years, and every year if you look at the table after Christmas we would be winning it comfortably, even if we are not top of the table before Christmas.
"Traditionally the Six Nations period is good for us despite having a lot of guys away. For the rest of the guys in the squad this period is massive, and then after the Six Nations we get the England guys back and it just builds.
"But we always have a good squad here and we really can take another step forward, particularly as we don't have the massive pressure we had last season when we pretty much had to win every game from here on in to finish in the top two. Hopefully we can take those steps and get ourselves in a couple of finals in April and May."
Hamilton has become a familiar sight at Welford Road over the past four years but the utility back admits injuries have made this his most frustrating season so far.
However, fewer first team games mean he is fighting fit and ready to go - starting with this weekend's LV=Cup game at home to London Wasps, who beat Leicester 14-12 in a tight game at Adams Park in the Aviva Premiership before Christmas.
"It's been difficult, I was starting at the start of the year but I've had a couple of niggling injuries and they've restricted my game time," said the experienced New Zealander.
"I've lost my starting spot but the guys who have come in have been playing well and that's just how it is at Leicester I suppose. I managed to get on at the weekend and hopefully in the next couple of weekends I can show what I can do."
